Artist Statement

As an artist, my creative journey in sculpting clay is rooted in the simple joy of people watching. People are fascinating, they come in different shapes, sizes, and complexions.  Human facial features come in endless possibilities, while there are a lot of people who look alike there are even more that look completely different.  Clay is the perfect medium to capture the similarities and uniqueness of people because it’s shapeable, making the possibilities of combining facial features  and body shapes endless.  With clay I create sculptural representations of imaginative people versus portrait sculptures. Blending stylized realism with fanciful shapes, my work intertwines memory and imagination to create people with distinctive facial features and bodies while exhibiting moods, expressions and energies that are familiar and unfamiliar all at the same time.  I’ve learned that art is deeply personal and subjective, and I love that about art.   I want my sculptures to evoke an emotional or intellectual response that is unique to each observer. My goal is to share my fascination with the human face and body with others in ways that will create curiosity or recognition.
